What To Expect: Rides At Disney World

It's very hard not to enjoy the rides at Disney world. Probably it requires a serious deficit in the brain's fun recognition circuits. Disney imagineers (some of whom are ride designers and others focus on the incredible details of the surrounding environment) have been among the world's best ride engineers for over fifty years. Their track record at creating new rides that appeal to the target audience is probably unsurpassed. Some of the rides at Disney World have been providing thrills and fun since the Magic Kingdom opened and are still going strong. The long standing Pirates of the Caribbean ride (it opened in 1973) has become even more popular since the blockbuster film hit it inspired in 2003. Regrettably, this has increased wait times on line which is the common problem with the top rides at any theme park.

If you visit Disney World during a busy time (not recommended really, but sometimes you don't have a choice), then you need to do some planning. While the lines move along fairly well, at a really busy time you could wait 2 hours for a ride that lasts a few minutes. In some cases you can use the FastPass system to schedule your rides. Getting to the park early, however, is often the best alternative. Lines are often shorter in the evening and during parades and fireworks. If you are visiting several of the theme parks, if the Magic Kingdom is mobbed, it might be a good time to visit another area.

If small children are taking you to the park, be aware that a number of rides do have height restrictions so you should check them first - before you get your small companions all excited about a ride they won't be allowed on. There are plenty of rides that will thrill the little ones, so don't worry about it. If your children are too small for some rides, it's handy to have another big person along so you can still go on them. With some attractions having single rider lines which are usually pretty quick, both of the big people can still enjoy the wilder rides.

Sometimes smaller children are a little timid at first about some of the rides. Pick out something fairly low key but fun - maybe Big Thunder Mountain which is fun and not particularly scary. Pretty soon you may be wishing they were still scared to go on. While Splash Mountain is a little wild, the height restriction is only 40 inches (102cm), and usually the kids aren't as bothered at getting wet as the parents.

While you'll find the majority of rides at Disney World in the Magic Kingdom, followed by Disney-MGM studios, Animal Kingdom now has the world class Expedition Everest roller coaster as well as Kilimanjaro Safari, Kali River Rapids and the excellent Finding Nemo musical. The level of detail that went into Animal Kingdom, the waiting areas and the attractions is very impressive. Both EPCOT and Animal Kingdom are somewhat relaxed environments and excellent places to recharge and unwind a bit.
