No Virginia, There Is No Disney Land OrlandoWhat this is about is a common misconception. "Disney Land Orlando" just doesn't exist, but people will keep on searching for it on the internet or talk about it with their friends. Disney Land - actually it's Disneyland, is not located in Florida. The first park opened by Walt Disney carries the name Disneyland and it's located in Anaheim which is near Los Angeles in California. The name of the resort located in Florida is Walt Disney World Resort. And even that has led to added confusion. Originally it was going to be named Disneyworld, but after Walt Disney's death his brother Roy changed the name in honor of Walt's dream. And then there's the Orlando part of the misconception. Disney World (or Disneyworld) isn't in Orlando. It's actually located to the southwest of Orlando in area known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The are does contain two cities, Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, however the Reedy Creek Improvement District is the organization that governs all of Disney World's land. And since Disney controls the improvement district, it has pretty much a free hand to do whatever it wants within the district. That kind of arrangement reduces a lot of the red tape and bureaucratic delays that often plague construction projects. There's very little comparison really between Disneyland and Disney World. Up until 2001 one theme park and few hotels made up the entire Disneyland complex. Disney's California Adventure was created in 2001 and Disneyland was upgraded to the Disneyland Resort. But 2 parks and a mere three hotels can't hold a candle to the 20 hotels, villas, 2 water parks, 4 theme parks and other associated attractions making up the Walt Disney World Resort. Disney World extends over 47 square miles making it larger than many cities and approximately the size of San Francisco. Back in 1955, when Disneyland was originally built there was an unfortunate lack of funds for purchasing additional land in Anaheim. Quite naturally this meant that development was limited by the available space. The lesson was well learned and Disney was careful to purchase as much land as they would ever need for the Disney World resort. They also were smart to do it secretly through dummy corporations to disguise their intentions and keep the prices at a rational level. That far-sighted approach is one of the main reasons Walt Disney World Resort has become one of the premier tourist attractions in the world. So if you go around searching for Disney land Orlando, don't be surprised at what you find. Some of the results will be a little odd. |
